| Introduction |
Chennai is the fourth largest city in India. Even though the city itself is just 350 years old,
the areas that comprise the city are centuries old. It is the heart of the Dravidian
culture and gateway to South India.
It is a coastal city with 2 large ports, a thriving business hub with major auto and IT industries.
The City and the State (Tamil Nadu) have lot of attraction for the tourists - ranging from architectures
to theme parks. Places of interest outside Chennai include Mahabalipuram, Ooty,
Kodaikanal and Pondicherry.
It is a cosmpolitan city, considered more conservative than other major cities. It has a famous
cuisine and is home to second largest movie production centre in India.
All major countries (including the US, UK, Germany and Japan) have their consulates here
Among the popular festivals celebrated are Pongal (January), Tamil New Year (April), Eids, Diwali
(October - November) and Christmas (December).
November - January is also the music season in Chennai when scores of halls play host to a variety
of traditional music concerts (Carnatic and others).
